Safari for Windows
June 11th, 2007 by Fuzz
Hallelujah! Steve Jobs and the boys released a public beta of their Safari web browser (version 3) that now runs on Windows as well as Mac! I am a big fan of the browser, however, I have been pretty much been using Firefox as my default Mac browser lately because WordPress (my CMS of choice) didn’t have a WYSIWYG editor for Safari until the latest version was released.
Glossary (for you non-geeks)
WordPress: The software that I use to write my posts. It is actually what you are looking at right now.
CMS: Content Management System - WordPress is a form of a CMS.
WYSIWYG: “What You See Is What You Get” - kind of like typing with Microsoft Word. I can highlight words and make them bold or italicized without having to actually “code” it. Without a WYSIWYG system, I’d have to write everything in code, and while that’s not all that hard, it’s easier to just click a button and let the software do it for you.

ADD to Glossary:
PUBLIC BETA: a not-yet-ready-for-prime-time release of a new piece of software. It’s software that’s still in the testing stage. Google does this with ALL of their products —> to the point where even 3 years after their products are released they still say “beta” on them.

Okay, thats nice, but why would I want to even run Safari on windows? Safari on a Mac only does so much…
I’ll stick to Firefox on EVERYTHING! (Windows, Linux, MAC, Solaris, Freebsd, and on and on and on…)
I’m a geek what can I say?

I can understand where Tom is coming from. Most computer geeks are in his court…and favor Mozilla anything because of its programmer friendly, open-sourceness. I cannot say I don’t agree with him…
But Safari on Windows is a smart move. Why not? Micro$oft stopped supporting IE on a Mac after IE5…so why not turn the tables and try and get on as many PCs as possible. Just wait until Safari comes bundled with the iTunes d/l. That is when it will start to see more of a market penetration.

Ahem!

“It took security engineers perhaps less than two hours yesterday to introduce Apple’s surprise entry in the field of Windows browsers to the big, cruel world of exploits and vulnerabilities, following its introduction yesterday morning at WWDC”
Tell me again why you should run Safari? I’ll pass…
