[UPDATED] Tonight On TLC: The Engagement Story

I’ve been busy… too busy to write up the details on our engagement.

You wanna hear it… here it goes…

[UPDATED] - added photos and the story after the jump…

Part I: The Plan
Tracy and I are into photography. On Sunday the 16th, I told Tracy that we should go shoot some photos before we went to my mom’s for Easter. I was going to strategically hide some Easter eggs, an Easter chick, and an Easter bunny out in the park where I wanted to go for a walk. The fourth prop - the bunny’s carrot (carat ;) ) would be in my pocket. That’s when I would “pop the question…”

Part II: The Inevitable Hiccups
It snowed buckets on Friday and the forecast originally called for more snow on Sunday, so I was fearing that it would have been too crappy out to shoot photos. On top of the weather, we both had our children on Saturday night and they were each going with their respective parents on Sunday morning.

Initially, I planned on dropping off my daughter, hiding the props at a park near Juneau, picking up Tracy, and then going back to the park. But, Tracy’s son was being picked up at 8am and my little pun’kin was going to her grandma’s at 9am. So, somehow we worked it out that I would get Tracy and that she would ride with me over to drop off my daughter, and then we would go take photos from there.

Our ultimate destination was my mom’s house in Eagle for Easter dinner. Since we would now be closer to West Bend than Juneau, Tracy would have questioned why I was driving back out towards Beaver Dam.

There was no way I could take the little one to a park to hide props.

  1. She would wonder why I was leaving Easter eggs, a stuffed chick, and a little Easter bunny in the woods.
  2. Once Tracy was in the car, my daughter would surely tell her of our trip to the park. Especially Even if I told her it was a secret.

Part III: The Way it Went Down
Luckily, the forecast changed and it was nice enough to still go for our photo hunt/walk.

Tracy sent me a txt message asking if she should just drive out to my house and we would ride together from there. At that point, there was seriously no way that I could go hide the props. However, Tracy’s ex-husband ended up being 25 minutes late to pick up her son, so the plans changed again - now I was going to drop off my daughter and then pick up Tracy. Still, I didn’t have any time to stash the goods.

I put the eggs, the chick, and the bunny in one of my jackets, and then put on my other jacket so that she didn’t question what was in my pockets. The ring was in the front pocket of my jeans. I picked Tracy up, and we headed on our way.

After driving around and taking some photos, we wound up at a park near Eagle that I had loved as a kid. I switched into my pre-propped jacket. She didn’t suspect a thing.

We started walking around taking different photos of things. Then I reached into my pocket and accidentally pulled out the Easter bunny (that was supposed to be the prop just prior to the ring). She called me a dork, and then I took some photos and we walked a little more down the path. Then I took out some eggs and put them on a park bench to shoot some more. She laughed and said that I should sit down on the completely snow-covered bench so she could take pictures of me and the eggs. Ugh! :)

After that, she asked if I had any more props. I said yes, and grabbed the chick. She was like, “geez.”

Then, when we went into the spring house, I said, “I do have one more prop…” (this is where I would have said, “I have the bunny’s carrot (carat)” had I not grabbed the wrong prop, first.) I pulled the ring out, got down on my knee, and asked Tracy to marry me. She said yes. We kissed. And… scene.

Part IV: The Family
We decided that we wouldn’t tell anyone and that we would just see if anybody noticed the gigantor ring on her hand. (Gigantor may be a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s an amply sized, 1-carat rock. ;) )

Nobody said a word.

So, before we were ready to leave, I joked, “Okay, we’re leaving, screw you guys for not noticing that Tracy and I are engaged.” :) Of course then everybody was all giddy over it. My step-sister claimed that she had seen it, but thought that she was the only one who didn’t know that we were engaged. Later, my sister would call to say that my brother-in-law, Jeff, noticed the ring, but didn’t think it was his place to say anything. Riiiiiiight. ;)

And that’s how Tracy and I got engaged.
