This week on Fifteen Minutes with Fuzz, I’m very thankful to be joined by three wonderful community leaders—Kristin Brandner, CEO of United Way of Washington County; Brigette David, site manager for Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast; and Joe Pichler, director of finance and administration at The Threshold. Together, we dive into a fantastic new partnership between United Way of Washington County and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program, a nationwide initiative that’s bringing free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five. This program is designed to spark a love of reading in young kids and build up their literacy skills, which are key to future success.\

How the Imagination Library is Inspiring Young Readers

As we chat, Kristin shares the United Way’s mission and why this program is such a powerful addition for the community. The Imagination Library gives each registered child one new book each month—no strings attached. These aren’t just any books either; they’re chosen by a team dedicated to making sure every title is age-appropriate and engaging for young readers. For parents and guardians, it’s a unique opportunity to establish a bonding experience through reading, which, as we know, has a tremendous impact on kids’ development.

An Overwhelmingly Positive Response

One month in, the program has already had a huge response, with over 1,300 families signing up in Washington County alone. It’s clear this partnership is filling a critical need. Joe explains how early reading experiences provide kids with a solid foundation for learning to read, fostering cognitive skills, imagination, and curiosity. He shares from personal experience how reading to his children not only prepared them for school but also gave them a lifelong love for books.

Brigette also dives into the research, which shows that children exposed to books from a young age improve their reading skills by nearly 29% compared to those who aren’t. It’s a reminder that reading doesn’t just help academically—it’s a doorway to understanding, empathy, and emotional resilience. These benefits are especially important today, as they support both academic growth and mental well-being.

If you’re a parent, grandparent, or know someone in Washington County with a child under five, tune in to hear all the details on how to get involved. And if you want to help United Way keep this program thriving, there are many ways to support their mission.
