Winter in West Bend isn’t just about bundling up against the cold—it’s about coming together, supporting local businesses, and celebrating the season. This week, I had the pleasure of chatting with Noelle Braun, Executive Director of the Downtown West Bend Association. Noelle shared how downtown West Bend transforms into a winter wonderland this time of year with events that bring charm and community spirit during the colder months.
Downtown West Bend Association
The mission of the Downtown West Bend Association (DWBA) is clear: create events that attract visitors while supporting local businesses. From staples like the Farmers Market and Music on Main to smaller, unique experiences throughout the year, the DWBA keeps downtown vibrant.
“It’s about bringing people together, supporting the shops, and showing off everything West Bend has to offer,” Noelle explained.
A Hallmark Christmas Scene in West Bend
If you haven’t seen downtown West Bend during the holidays, you’re missing out. Picture the tree at Old Settlers Park glowing with twinkling lights, streets lined with festive decorations, and a scene straight out of a Hallmark movie. It’s also a vital time for local businesses.
“This is a crucial time of year for small businesses,” Noelle emphasized. “We work to promote events like Small Business Saturday, holiday open houses, and our new Merry and Bright Shopping Nights—where shops stay open late on Thursdays leading up to Christmas.”
And yes, Santa will even be there for pictures on Thursday, December 19th—a magical moment for kids and families alike.
The Downtown Polar Express
For adults, the Downtown Polar Express is in full swing. Sixteen downtown bars and restaurants are serving up their own themed winter cocktails, with $2 from each drink going to the Full Shelf Food Pantry.
“We’ve extended the Polar Express through January this year,” Noelle said. “It’s a fun way for people to get out, try something new, and support a great cause.” The event wraps up on January 19th—just in time for the West Bend Winter Warm Up.
West Bend Winter Warm Up
From January 17th–19th, downtown West Bend comes alive for the Winter Warm Up. The event features ice sculptures that line Main Street, 6th Avenue, and the Riverwalk—each sponsored by local businesses.
Here’s what’s on tap:
- Live Ice Sculpting: Watch an artist carve an ice sculptor at Old Settlers Park on Saturday, January 18th at 11 a.m.
- Fire Pits and Marshmallow Roasting: Warm up with a toasty treat.
- Hot Cocoa and Apple Cider Stations: Stay cozy while you stroll the sculptures.
- Free Movies at The Bend Theater: Ice Age on Saturday and Ice Age 2 on Sunday.
- Sled Dogs on Sunday: Huskies from H2M2 rescue return for petting, photo ops, and family fun.
“It’s a beautiful event,” Noelle said. “The sculptures, the fire pits, and even the sled dogs make it a can’t-miss winter tradition.”
Chocolate Around the Bend
Chocolate Around the Bend returns on February 7th and 8th, with some new twists.
“We’re elevating the experience this year,” Noelle explained. “For $20, attendees will get a chocolate box sponsored by Candyman on Main and visit 17–20 stops downtown to collect gourmet chocolates.”
Add in pop-up markets, themed drinks at bars, and the cozy charm of downtown, and you’ve got the perfect winter date night—or weekend.
Get Involved
None of these events happen without volunteers. From tending fire pits at Winter Warm Up to handing out marshmallows or maps, there are plenty of opportunities to help bring these experiences to life. Visit downtownwestbend.com for details and to sign up.
